Ryan Reynolds starrer Free Guy beats box office expectations

American actor Ryan Reynolds-featuring video game action-comedy “Free Guy” performed beyond everybody’s expectations and went straight to the helm of the North American box office in its opening weekend.

The computer game-inspired rom-com took No. 1s in the UK and Russia just as Belgium, Israel, the Middle East, Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Singapore, and then some. It opened at No. 2 in Australia and Mexico, among others, and was the top new Hollywood title in Korea where nearby comedy ‘Sinkhole’ ruled the casing with a $7.8M debut.

“Free Guy,” a sci-fi comedy adventure that takes place within a video game, grossed at 4,165 North American theaters over the weekend. Globally, “Free Guy” earned another $22.5 million for a global tally of $51 million. Heading into the weekend, even bullish projections thought a start above $20 million at the domestic box office. This could be a delay because the COVID-19 delta variant shook the consumer confidence in going to the cinema.

Moreover, Disney and 20th Century film is an original property, meaning there isn’t a built-in fanbase to reliably show up on the opening weekend.

In the movie, Ryan Reynolds, acting as an anti-hero. He realizes he is a character in a video game and seeks to take control of his life in his hand.
