Remembering Princess Diana 25 years after her untimely demise

The people’s princess, Diana

On Wednesday, it is 25 years since Princess Diana passed away, shocking not only the British royal family but the entire globe. Diana, a gorgeous star at the age of 36, was well-known for her beauty, charity, grace and sad royal life.

She was also one of the most well-known women in the English-speaking world. Millions of people had witnessed her transformation from the reserved 20-year-old wife of the elder Prince Charles into the influential woman whose legacy led to significant changes in the traditional royal family.

What happened on August 31?

On August 31, 1997, the “People’s Princess” perished in an automobile accident in Paris. The tragedy sparked debate over how the tabloid media covered her and conspiracy theories about how she died.

Dodi Fayed, an Egyptian-born man who was dating Diana at the time, and the driver, Henri Paul, perished in the collision, which happened as they attempted to avoid a pack of motorcycle-riding paparazzi on their way to Dodi’s apartment after leaving the Ritz Paris. Even though the speed limit was only 30 mph, their car was travelling faster than that and eventually slammed into a pillar in the centre of the road.

According to eyewitness accounts, additional photographers on the site were criticised for shooting pictures instead of attempting to assist in the immediate aftermath of the incident.

Escaping media all the time

Although the photographers were first accused of being responsible for the collision, a French judge exonerated them in 1999. Paul, the driver, was found to have blood alcohol levels that were three times the legal limit for the nation, according to prosecutors. A thorough Scotland Yard investigation in 2006 revealed the collision was a “tragic accident.” But in April 2008, a British jury found that the driver and the paparazzi shared responsibility for the driver’s egregious driving behaviour.

Diana’s distinctive style

That hasn’t stopped more people from looking into how the press harassed Diana and her family. They were drawn to Diana in part because of her vibrant and audacious sense of style and in part because of the ways she deviated from royal custom.

Close relatives of Diana continue to express harsh disapproval of the paparazzi. Charles Spencer, her brother, referred to his sister as “the most hunted person of the modern age” when he said that the press was always following her.

Diana admitted in a shocking interview with BBC journalist Martin Bashir in 1995 that both she and Prince Charles had extramarital romances, much to the dismay of the Palace. Diana had previously talked openly about her miserable marriage to Prince Charles. She referred to Prince Charles’s romance with Camilla Parker Bowles by saying, “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.” Later, in 2005, Charles would wed Parker Bowles without the presence of either Queen Elizabeth II or Prince Philip. Diana and Prince Charles finalised their divorce in 1996.

Diana’s charitable work

Diana put in a lot of effort on behalf of charities all around the world. That leverages her notoriety to bring attention to a variety of significant humanitarian concerns. Here are the reasons Diana will continue to be referred to as the “People’s Princess” twenty years after her passing.

Diana changed the face of the British monarchy. Moreover, she led a campaign for a worldwide ban on landmines. She also changed the world’s perception of HIV and AIDS. Furthermore, it raised awareness of leprosy. Made regular personal visits to London’s homeless centers. Not just that, she also reached out to children. Last but not least, she lent her support to the arts.

Even 25 years later, Diana’s shadow continues to hang over the royal family. Her boys continue to play a significant role in the story, mentioning her and preserving her legacy through all these different TV series and movies.

Karachi ab waisa na raha! A tale of nostalgia

The City of Lights

Karachi is ranked as the eighth-most populous metropolitan area in the world. It is home to a diverse range of industries, including trade, fashion, entertainment, and high-rise skyscrapers.

Karachi

The obvious terrain and the landscaping of this city were completely distinct from any other city. And it also includes the enormous airport and the soft, cold night breeze. It is more rough, perplexing, enormous, and complex. The symmetry and angles in Karachi are considerably different from those in any other city, where every nook and cranny, street, road, residential neighbourhood, and business sector appear to have been well planned.

Karachi now

However poor planning on the part of the populace and the government has turned this city into a huge trash dump. This year, the monsoon arrived in the city a little earlier, and we can all notice the havoc it brought. The infrastructure turned into piles of bricks, and potholes appeared on the roads.

Karachi was formerly referred to be the “city of lights,” but in recent years, there has been far more darkness than light. Both physically, with the ongoing power outages (signifying poor management and corruption), and metaphorically, with the death, destruction, and hopelessness that have overtaken the area. However, life is still vibrant in the resilient city. People go about their daily lives; they work, have fun, attend ceremonies, and hang around. Until you see the daily reports of the varied body counts in the news, you might not even be aware that things in Karachi are different than usual in some parts of the city.

Through Wasfa

Wasfa Kamal, a Pakistan-based illustrator, has similar ideas for the city. She recently illustrate an image describing how the city used to be to her and how it has since changed into something dreadful. Furthermore she attached a note with it that explains her feeling a bit more!

“Karachi ab waisa na raha”

The heartfelt caption reads,

The karachi situation is getting worst day by day. Karachi is NOT at the verge of falling apart, it already HAS fallen apart. It has been shattered into pieces. This city has turned into a huge garbage can which has been rotting for ages and people do not care, WE do not care! The roads condition are worst, there is not a single road in karachi that is perfect, Getting stuck in karachi traffic in these horrible roads is so exhuasting now days! I was having conversating with my father insisting him to move from karachi and bragging how karachi is now worst city to live and he said “beta karachi hamare waqt me aisa bilkul nahi tha.” Being a karachiite, I don’t even feel like leaving my house anymore. I love this city with all my heart but I won’t shy away in saying that at this point in time, I feel miserable to be living here.

Wasfa visualised the caption’s actuality more through her thoughts.

A thought to linger

Even while the situation is quite bad, it’s not as bad as the news media would have you believe; there are still moments of normalcy and happiness among all the chaos. Even while Karachi may no longer be a city of lights, it is nevertheless a lively place where people continue to live despite their worries. Let’s hope the lights turn back on soon.

Friday Flix Series of the Week: Locke & Key

The magical world of Locke & Key

Imagine a world where you can open any door, or have magic power with a key. Yes, we are talking about a few keys, that will be able to open different magical doors and you will eventually step into the world of Locke & Key!

Locke & Key cast, storyline

The Locke children Tyler (Connor Jessup), Kinsey (Emilia Jones), and Bode (Jackson Robert Scott), as well as their mother Nina (Darby Stanchfield), move to their ancestral home of “Keyhouse” after the family patriarch Rendell (Bill Heck) is murdered. The series is based on the graphic novel of the same name written by Joe Hill and illustrated by Gabriel Rodriguez.

It’s their younger brother Bode who has the most exciting interactions with their powers in Season 1, even though siblings Tyler and Kinsey do have their own adventures with the keys. This Locke & Key adaptation is a little more kid-friendly than the book, so Bode’s young glee after finding each key is palpable and quite contagious. Bode is always given just the proper amount of wonder and innocence by Scott, who never makes him seem overly impressionable.

When Tyler and Kinsey aren’t working with Bode, their adventures throughout the first half of the season are typically limited to high school drama, such as utilising the keys to get even with “mean girls” or trying to win over a potential love interest. When Locke & Key leans into its fantastical elements, it feels far more engaging than when it occasionally resembles a CW teen drama rather than an ambitious mystery.

The magic of keys

The “Head Key,” which allows the series to experiment with body horror while still becoming inventive with its graphics, is one particular highlight in that regard. Using the key, which is put into the back of the neck, a person can figuratively unlock the door to their mind, allowing them to revisit memorable events or record new knowledge for later recall. The appearance of each person’s mental palace varies depending on their life experiences; Bode’s is similar to a sizable playground or arcade, while Kinsey’s is similar to a sizable mall. Even better, the Head Key provides the audience with enlightening glimmers of the Locke family’s past.

Past and present!

The series’ skillful use of flashbacks, which enables the spectator to witness the children interacting with their father and imparting believable weight and pain to those connections, is one of its most stirringly emotive features. It’s simple to overlook the fact that a magical key is the source of all of these fantastical events, which are wonderful opportunities for the kids to develop their character. The most compelling aspect of Locke & Key is its assured fusion of fantastical and realistic drama. When the series tries to address too many narratives at once, it runs into difficulty.

Villian, not so villian-y

Dodge, an enigmatic character who torments the Locke family in an effort to get their keys, is one of the issues I’ve had with the book. The issue is not Laysla Oliveira’s portrayal of Dodge; rather, the character’s development suffers as a result of the story’s adaptation from the graphic novel to a more general audience.

Even when Dodge kills someone in a way that would be shocking in any other circumstance, the show frequently leans into the absurd humour of her actions rather than amplifying the tension, undermining some of the show’s scariest moments. Dodge is the main antagonist, so you’d expect her to be a truly terrifying figure. Even with a nemesis like Dodge waiting in the shadows, it’s hard to picture something terrible happening to the Locke kids despite all the mischief they get into.

Final verdict

Locke & Key on Netflix excels because to its bright aesthetics and emphasis on the close bonds among the Locke family. Jackson Robert Scott does a good job portraying Bode, who is the emotional core of the show. However, because the programme prioritises humour above horror, it struggles to make its main enemy truly menacing.

In addition, throughout Season 1, the show makes valiant efforts to be an engaging family drama, supernatural thriller, murder mystery, and high school dramedy. As a result, the series never quite feels like a unified whole. While the fantasy parts concerning the keys and the family storyline are effective, other aspects of the plot aren’t quite as memorable.

A tale of friendship beyond borders despite of borders

Friendship beyond borders, despite of borders!

The enmity between India and Pakistan dates back a very long time. Borders and historical inequalities separate the two nations. Yet despite all of this, LinkedIn user Sneha Biswas recently shared a touching account of how friendship transcends borders. Sneha had only ever heard tales about Pakistan’s conflicts and rivalries with India during her childhood in India. Sneha talked about how she met her closest friend from Pakistan on her first day at Harvard Business School. And how that encounter altered her outlook.

Sneha Biswas

Building a bond

Over “many chais, biryanis, financial models, and case study preparations,” Sneha and her Pakistani friend grew closer. Sneha was moved by her friend’s account of overcoming expectations and pursuing her aspirations. On Harvard’s well-known Flag Day, Sneha posted a photo of the two displaying their national flags with pride. “Look at us on the famous flag day at #Harvard – flaunting our flags and smiling away at the joy of “breaking barriers” – not just literally between India and Pakistan, but also for the countless little girls from India and Pakistan who are scared to shoot for the stars.” Sneha wrote.

Netizens were overwhelmed

After reading the account of Sneha and her companion, internet users were astounded. They went to the comments section to express their pride in their nation’s culture and to say that friendship knows no boundaries in terms of religion or ethnicity.

One user wrote, “Exactly, across the man made LOC we are the same people. Surely you two share a lifelong friendship that may bring changes across the borders for girls on both sides and be inspired to lead’’. While another user wrote, ‘’We built walls between each other and thus, it’s up to us to bring them down.”

Unquestionably, Sneha’s relationship with her Pakistani friend has rekindled the idea of true friendship and given people all across the world fresh hope for peace and togetherness.

Saddest end to an era for Robin Williams!

Robin Williams has long been regarded as one of Hollywood’s most well-liked actors thanks to his numerous film and television roles. Even though he was excellent in dramatic roles, he is best known for his theatre and screen comedic performances. Williams had been battling Lewy body disease up until the end of his life, and his death at the time came as a big shock because no one could have dreamed the comedian could have ever passed away in such a horrifying manner.

He was considered one of Hollywood’s most well-liked celebrities for a long time due to his numerous film and television roles. Although he was excellent in serious roles, he was most well-known for his comedic performances, both on stage and in movies. Williams had Lewy body disease up to his death, and his passing came as a big shock at the time because no one could have anticipated the comedian would have perished in such a horrifying way.

The improv king!

Williams’ portrayal as “Mork, from Ork,” an alien from the planet Ork, in a 1974 “Happy Days” episode led to his initial recognition. The performance sparked the successful spinoff “Mork & Mindy,” which ran on ABC from 1978 to 1982. Williams was infamous for frequently deviating from the script while filming, and finally the producers began purposefully leaving plot holes so he could improvise.

During that he was also preparing for his first major motion picture, “Popeye,” which he would appear in in 1980. His career really took off after that. Williams was nominated for 85 awards, including the Oscars, Emmys, and Golden Globes. He won 65 of them.

He disclosed that Remus Lupin, a wizard who served as the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor at Hogwarts (also a werewolf), was one of the largest parts in the “Harry Potter” trilogy and one in which Robin Williams had expressed a strong interest.”

Friday Flix Series of the Week: Ms. Marvel

A new world of superpowers with Kamala Khan as Ms. Marvel

Ms. Marvel, the newest Marvel Disney+ TV series, has exposed viewers to a variety of new settings in the MCU by showcasing mixed and various cultures, locales, colours, jam-packed action and ‘desi‘ characters.

I don’t know much about the Marvel universe because I’m not a fan, but because Ms. Marvel isn’t related to any other Marvel films, I figured I should give it a shot and basically start with my first Marvel series.

Ms. Marvel cast

The ensemble caught my attention right away because Kamala Khan, or Ms. Marvel, is not your typical superhero. She is really desi first and foremost. She is originally from Pakistan and comes from a Muslim household. Iman Vellani was the main lead.  Mehwish Hayat, Nimra Bucha, Fawad Khan, Samina Ahmed, Saagar Shaikh, Yasmeen Fletcher, Rish Shah, Zenobia Shroff, Laurel Marsden, Mohan Kapoor, and Matt Lintz make up the rest of the cast. Aramis Knight, Farhan Akhtar, Travina Springer, and others make up the additional cast.

Also Read: Ms. Marvel trailer introduces first Muslim superhero in Disney Series

Ms. Marvel storyline

In the pilot episode, viewers learn more about Ms. Marvel’s aka Kamala’s fangirl side as a result of her and her best friend Bruno’s (Lintz) attempts to win the New Jersey AvengerCon; they also learn that she’s a bit of a misfit as a result of her frenemy Zoe (Marsden); that her religious life is mostly addressed when she persuades Nakia (Fletcher) that they’re the new generation that can bring about change in their community; that her romantic side comes out to play with Kamran (Rish Shah and the Red and, her family heavily influences every decision she makes because, well, she’s only 16.

Even with her superpowers, which were effectively bestowed upon her by her grandmother, Bruno is critical to Kamala’s ability to fully utilise them. Without his assistance, there is no way Kamala could control the light that drives her purple energy blasts. Ms. Marvel is still having trouble keeping up with her foes more than halfway through the series, which serves as a good reminder that it’s entertaining to watch superheroes struggle and occasionally fail because it makes their successes feel like a much bigger reward.

The series also is more emphasised on the dual nature of Ms. Marvel’s appeal. Of course, the first is the emphasis on Kamala’s family in Pakistan and America. The other is what the Partition did to her family’s culture. In the upcoming weeks, it looks that the show will address this from a first-person perspective. That’s encouraging for the rest of the season since it suggests that the villains will be left in the past (which is also the present) so that viewers can discover what’s crucial.

Final Verdict

So far so good, the storyline is hooking. The amalgamation of locations, colours, direction, wit and action everything is on point! The young Kamala Khan, or Ms. Marvel, played by Iman Vellani, is fantastic. Her original tale of a teenage coming-of-age is introduced in the first two episodes, which are enjoyable, humorous, and colourful. The show is definitely accepting the hype it deserves and the cultural representation is better than what I see and observed in most of the Netflix stories for Muslims, especially the Hijaabi girls.

Rating: 9/10

Hasan Raheem and Natasha Noorani spread lazy retro no love vibes with Faltu Pyar

Natasha Noorani x Hasan Raheem, the ultimate collab!

We’ve all heard a lot of hit songs from Pakistani singers this year, and now there’s another one to add to our playlist: ‘Faltu Pyar,’ a surprising collaboration between Natasha Noorani, Hasan Raheem, and Talal Qureshi.

Faltu Pyar by Natasha Noorani x Hasan Raheem

Raheem and Noorani’s vocals are featured in the music video for the new single, which contains a reggaeton-like beat, latin guitar samples, and, most significantly, Raheem smiling from ear to ear. With a cigarette in hand, the heartthrob Hasan rides into the scene in a vintage automobile, rocking the wealthy kid appearance.

The song tells of a love that is treacherous and full of falsehoods in digital age. Hasan Raheem enters a new future reality, where he discovers Noorani singing her part, her hair pulled back and her crisp voice. Raheem, on the other hand, Raheem has a sleepy, laid-back vibe, swaying to the beats. The music video for Faltu Pyar is an aesthetic blend of forgotten and modern periods, with pop music blasting in the backdrop, neon-colored lights flashing all around, and Natasha Noorani dressed in a retro updo and reggaeton-esque attire throughout the track.

The smooth ragaetton-ish play on aesthetics!

They both sure know how to play with the aesthetics. Natasha Noorani has an amazing sense of creativity when it comes to the music videos. This one is directed by “For Entertainment Purpose Only” (FEPO). The vocal mix is done by Abdullah Kasumbi and the song is mixed and mastered by Talal Qureshi. For the MV, a surprising element was ‘Mehar Bano,’ who was behind the smooth choreography. (SPOT ON!)

So it’s not just about the words on the page. It’s also about the visuals. The modern, futuristic aura, as well as the eye-catching neon play and everything else vibe-y. ‘Faltu Pyar’ has received 103,550 views on YouTube since its debut.
